Rest
In the modern world of planes, trains, and automobiles, this may
be the most important nutrient of all, rest. Quiet moments. Long
unbroken silences. Restorative naps. Sound sleep. Deep sleep. Time
alone. Time in nature. Genuine intimacy. These things are all very
important nutrients, too.
Although it is true that the cells, tissues, organs, and systems
of our bodies are constantly in motion, engaged in various metabolic
activity; it is also true that they also experience moments of retreat
and repose as well. It is not a matter of ever reaching a point
of no activity (that would be called death!) but rather the subtle
shifts and changes that occur with different activities.
When we are resting and sleeping, the unconscious healing mechanisms
of our body begin to take over and attempt to initiate and accomplish
things that just arent possible if we are constantly doing
other things, or constantly introducing foods and beverages that
keep the metabolic doing mechanisms turned on and stimulated. Only
in the states of deep relaxation and deep restful sleep can the
most important work of detoxification and biological regeneration
occur. This is the essence of the term restorative sleep.
Some of the most important healing work of identifying, neutralizing
and eliminating toxins throughout the body and rebuilding healthier
cells can only occur during periods of deep relaxation and deep
sleep...the times when we are doing less and being more. Perhaps
the most important "nutrient" in the entire biological
process of regaining and maintaining our health and well-being is
rest.
