Sunlight
Without sunlight there would be no life. Sunlight mingling with minerals and
water in the earliest primordial mists (about 3.5 billion years
ago) gave birth to earths first food: the single-celled blue
green algae. The algae in turn gave birth to oxygen, which gave
birth to everything else. This process of sunlight-mingling (photo-synthesis)
is responsible for all life on earth.
Precautions about overexposing our skin to sunlight are necessary
because we live in an atmosphere with and altered Ozone layer. However,
the right amount of sunlight exposure is very healthy, and extremely
complimentary to the normal functioning of the human body.
Sunlight entering our eyes nourishes the pineal gland, which is
located in the middle of our brain. A healthy pineal gland produces
the hormone melatonin, which helps regulate sleep cycles. A healthy
pineal gland is also related to clear thinking, memory and good
moods... all normal functions of the human brain. These functions
are related to another hormone produced by the pineal gland called
serotonin. As scientific research progresses, the health and normal
regulation of more and more organs and systems of the human body
are being connected with a properly nourished and fully functioning
pineal gland. We already know that the immune system and the reproductive
system are affected by the health of the pineal gland.
Sunlight seems to be the most desirable nutrient for the pineal
gland. With the proper quantity and regular exposure to sunlight,
the pineal gland performs at optimum levels. Even ancient peoples
were aware of this gland at some intuitive level and referred to
it as our third eye.
The modern dis-ease known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD),
is a disease that occurs in people (and animals) who have been deprived
of sufficient sunlight.
When we talk about healthy, organic, living foods, we are in part
referring to the life force of these foods. The life force of something
is a quality that is not easily measured and is often completely
left out of the nutritional equation altogether. One explanation
of life force describes it as the measure of captured sunlight in
a particular food or thing.
Our relationship to sunlight is essential in our quest for better
nutrition and better health. Sunlight is a fundamental food!
